The Protest — About This Work
Félix Vallotton, 1893
About the Work
A crowd rushes forward as a protest is broken up. Sharp black and white shapes make the woodcut immediate even before its individual figures become clear.
The museum relates the print to Vallotton’s engagement with social conflict and to the flat patterned space of Japanese woodcuts. Its unusually empty lower right contrasts with the density of the crowd.
Cleveland distinguishes the 22.9 × 33.5 cm sheet from its 20.4 × 31.9 cm image and much larger secondary support. The selected 30 × 40 cm frame is governed by the recorded sheet, not by that secondary support.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
