The Resurrection — About This Work

Albrecht Dürer, 1510

About the Work

The resurrected Christ emerges from the tomb while the soldiers charged with guarding it sleep. His body is shown with a pronounced sculptural strength, in contrast to the inactive figures below.

The Cleveland Museum of Art places the print within Dürer's woodcuts of Christ's Passion and identifies this impression as a proof made before Latin verses were added to the reverse of sheets in the published series. The museum relates the figure's heroic proportions to Dürer's engagement with classical and Italian visual models.

The movement is organised vertically: the guarded tomb and sleeping bodies occupy the lower part of the image, while Christ rises into an opening of cloud and light. The banner and raised hand extend that ascent. The contrast between his upright body and the folded or reclining soldiers makes the transformation visible through posture as well as through the sacred subject.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
