Tobias Healing His Father's Blindness — About This Work

Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1640–45

About the Work

Figures gather around a seated father at the moment his blindness is treated. Rembrandt gives the biblical story the closeness of a domestic encounter, making bodily attention and small gestures central to its telling.

The subject comes from the Book of Tobit, in which Tobias returns and heals his father. The museum discusses Rembrandt's ability to humanise religious narrative through details associated with ordinary life.

Brown pen and touches of white keep the group legible without making the sheet uniformly finished. The surrounding framing lines remain part of the drawing, preserving the boundary within which the closely gathered action unfolds.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach.
