Trees — About This Work
Jean Baptiste Pillement, 1700s(?)
About the Work
Two slender trees rise through a pale field of watercolour. Their fine branches invite close looking, while the light wash gives the drawing an atmosphere beyond the bare description of trunks and leaves.
Graphite provides an underlying framework, with colour allowed to remain transparent around it. The relationship between the drawn structure and the looser wash gives the trees both clarity and delicacy.
The unfilled paper is important to the balance of the sheet. It holds the branches apart and lets their irregular growth remain legible, making a small natural subject sufficient to organise the whole image.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
