Two Poplars in the Alpilles near Saint-Rémy — About This Work

Vincent van Gogh, 1889

About the Work

Two poplars stand close together at the centre of the painting, with a small building visible between them. Strong outlines and lively brushwork carry their upward movement into the surrounding hills and sky.

Van Gogh painted this landscape in 1889 while staying at a psychiatric hospital near Saint-Rémy in southern France. The Cleveland Museum of Art describes it as an autumn scene made during a period when he had resumed working outdoors.

The original measures 45.7 × 61.6 cm. Presenting the complete image at that recorded scale preserves the tall composition, while surrounding white space accommodates it within the frame.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach.
