Victoria Dubourg — About This Work

Edgar Degas, c. 1866

About the Work

Victoria Dubourg faces the viewer directly. Degas gives particular attention to her eyes, while the lighter description of head and shoulders keeps the gaze at the centre of the portrait.

Dubourg was herself an artist, known for flower still lifes. This drawing belongs to a group of studies for Degas's painted portrait of her, now in Toledo, and concentrates on the sitter's expression rather than a surrounding setting.

The graphite line moves between precision and suggestion. Its restraint makes the more carefully worked features especially apparent, allowing the portrait to hold a strong presence without covering the entire sheet with detail.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
