Villas at Trouville — About This Work

Gustave Caillebotte, 1884

About the Work

Coastal villas sit below a grassy slope beside a blue-green sea. Caillebotte's elevated viewpoint makes the buildings part of a larger coastal arrangement, with the water opening the image beyond their more compact forms.

The museum locates the view at Trouville on the Normandy coast. It identifies the villas as private shoreline retreats outside the town's centre, giving the painted setting a particular social and geographical context.

The steep change between near ground and sea gives the composition its strength. The eye moves from the more solid foreground towards the lighter space beyond, preserving the sense of looking out from a specific height.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
