Virgin and Child — About This Work
Andrea Mantegna, 1485–1491
About the Work
Mary inclines her head toward the child in her arms, their rounded halos emerging against a field of close diagonal hatching.
The image uses engraving’s firm, linear vocabulary to describe heavy drapery, the faces and the intimacy of the encounter. Its scale is noticeably more personal than Mantegna’s broad mythological scenes.
Cleveland records the sheet at 25.8 × 24 cm. The selected 30 × 30 cm near-square presentation preserves that modest size.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
