Willows and Farmhouse at Sainte-Catherine-lès-Arras — About This Work

Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, 1871

About the Work

Corot painted Willows and Farmhouse at Sainte-Catherine-lès-Arras during a stay at Arras in 1871, late in a career in which landscape had become increasingly quiet, atmospheric and economical. The scene is modest: a farmhouse at the left, willow trees stretching across the middle ground, still water below and a pale, clouded sky above.

Much of the painting’s character comes from Corot’s handling of light. The foliage is broken into soft, flickering touches rather than described leaf by leaf, while the silvery greens of the willows are set against the darker trunk at the right. A small seated figure in a red cap provides one concentrated note of colour within the subdued landscape.

The Cleveland Museum of Art identifies this combination of quiet water and sky, soft trees and foliage touched with light as characteristic of the style that brought Corot broad public success. Nothing in the scene is made monumental. Its effect comes instead from balance, atmosphere and the sense of an ordinary rural place observed with unusual attentiveness.
