Young Saint John — About This Work
Berthe Morisot, 1890
About the Work
A blond-haired boy appears from the waist up with his hands loosely gathered, his pale clothing indicated by freely drawn pastel marks.
Cleveland records that Morisot made this study in the spring of 1890 at Mézy, where a local child posed for a projected full-length picture of Saint John the Baptist. The surviving study offers a direct view of her working process.
The institution records this pastel on pale blue laid paper at 57.1 × 38.1 cm. The chosen 50 × 70 cm portrait presentation must retain the drawn work’s recorded physical scale.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
