A Spring Shower — About This Work

Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, 1797–1804

About the Work

Figures shelter beneath umbrellas during a spring shower. The weather is registered through their responses, making a passing change of conditions into a scene of shared activity.

The museum places the drawing within Domenico Tiepolo's series of 104 Punchinello sheets, Entertainment for Children. The recurring comic character allows daily incidents to become theatrical without losing their recognisable practical details.

Brown ink and wash give the umbrellas and figures a common tonal language. The bordered sheet holds their varied movements together, inviting close attention to the humour of small adjustments to an ordinary inconvenience.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
