Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo
Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (1727–1804) was a Venetian painter and draughtsman whose work developed within his father Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's workshop before acquiring a distinct character. He assisted on major commissions and worked in Venice, Würzburg and Vicenza. In 1762 he accompanied his father to Madrid, returning to Venice after Giovanni Battista's death in 1770.
His own work could give greater attention to everyday incidents and down-to-earth behaviour alongside historical and religious subjects. The drawings represented here include animals, rural work and the comic figure of Punchinello. In the late series Entertainment for Children, that theatrical character moves through recognisable activities, allowing a familiar gesture or practical inconvenience to become a small dramatic event.
Pen and brown wash give these sheets a shared material language without making their subjects interchangeable. A game of bowls is organised by energetic bodies and an imposing wall; a shower appears through umbrellas and sheltering figures; livestock gather beneath a tree. The broad sheets reward attention to the intervals between these small incidents. Preserving their complete extent keeps the visible boundaries, surrounding paper and varied figures in proportion, allowing the humour and observation of the drawings to remain closely connected. Their humour remains rooted in closely observed behaviour.
